Jim Broun

College attended/Degree/Military Service and what you do now:

I have a degree in Information Systems Management from the University of Maryland University College, that I slowly chipped away at over a career in the United States Army.  I have been coaching CrossFit and the Barbell Club at CrossFit BNI since 2012.

Your athletic background (did you play competitive sports, college sports; your certifications – including what CrossFit certs you have:

My athletic background is limited to intramural sports while I was in the military; but for some, simply being in the Army is a competitive sport.

  • CrossFit Level 1 (2011)
  • CrossFit Level 2 (2014)
  • CrossFit Powerlifting (2012)
  • CrossFit Mobility (2012)
  • CrossFit Olympic Lifting (2013)
  • The Movement Fix Mobility Workshop (2016)
  • USA Weightlifting Sports Performance Coach (2014)
  • USA Weightlifting Advanced Sports Performance Coach (2015)

How did you find CrossFit?

I was introduced to CrossFit in 2004 when I was stationed in Okinawa, Japan.  It was a regular part of some Special Forces teams’ fitness programs, and I incorporated it into my section’s program as well.  It was effective, and a great change of pace from the routine.

Favorite CrossFit move (could be Oly lift, other lift, cardio move, even burpees (if you really love them!)):

I am a traditionalist, and like a mix of lifting and running.  Manion is my all-time favorite WOD.

CrossFit athlete you would most like to WOD with (and for what reason):

I may be the only CrossFit coach alive who doesn’t follow the CrossFit Games hype, or any of the high-level CrossFit athletes.  I would rather do a WOD with the athletes at CrossFit BNI any day of the week.
